Matt Byrne Media religiously presents the SA Premiere of the funny nunny musical Nunsense A-Men at Holden Street Theatres this November.
The original Nunsense is a hilarious spoof about the misadventures of five nuns trying to manage a fundraiser. Sadly, the rest of the sisterhood died from botulism after eating vichyssoise prepared by Sister Julia. Thus, the remaining nuns – ballet-loving Sister Leo, street-wise Sister Robert Anne, befuddled Sister Mary Amnesia, the Mother Superior Sister Regina, and mistress of the novices Sister Mary Hubert – stage a talent show in order to raise the money to bury their dearly departed.
Nunsense A-Men! sees all the nuns portrayed by male musical comedy performers. Think of it as “Mrs. Doubtfire enters the Convent.” Done totally seriously, this show is, to quote a critic, “no drag”. First performed in Brazil as “Novicas Rebeldes,” this version of “Nunsense” premiered in New York in 1998. Receiving rave reviews and standing ovations subsequent productions have boasted such stars as “Laugh-In’s” Arte Johnson as Mother Superior and Olympic Champion, Greg Louganis as Sister Robert Anne. A whole new layer of comedy surfaces with lines like “The guys in the old neighborhood still can’t believe I became a nun!” To quote the New York Times: “A change of habit, boy oh, boy!”
The MBM production features David Gauci as Sister Regina, Chris Stansfield as Sister Robert Anne, Jake Melling as Sister Mary Leo, Ron Abelita as Sr. Mary Amnesia and Matt Byrne as Sister Mary Hubert.
Byrne will direct and design the show, with Ben Saunders as Musical Director and Rose Vallen as Choreographer.
